about the artist
I have lived in Utah all my life and I spend every available minute in Southern Utah’s deserts and slot canyons along the Escalante River, looking for pronghorns in the west desert or hiking in the Mt. Timpanogos wilderness area, not far from my home in Lehi.
My work represents real places and things the way I remember them. They are my journal entries for those quiet moments in solitary places. Whether that is meeting the gaze of a coyote in the Paria Canyon on the Utah/Arizona border, finding columbine in the shade of aspen trees or standing beneath impossibly large arches and alcoves in maze-like gulches, each piece holds a memory that is dear to me.
Work Spotlight:
Some of My Favorite Work as of Late
I have this photo of Anna from when she was little, dressed in a thick, felt top, wearing white gloves and holding an iris she picked (irreverently) at a local garden. For compositional reasons, those details had to go. Sometimes it is hard to sacrifice the little details, but I think the print is stronger for it.
This is the last color reduction print I did in 2022. The lilies come from my garden. They started as the table decorations for my daughter's wedding about 10 years ago. I have been splitting and propagating them ever since. This year, I gave a bunch of starts back to my daughter, Katie, to put in a garden of her own.
The inspiration for this one came from an old photo from about the 1950's of men sitting on the bleachers and watching the races at the Sanpete County Fair, where I grew up. I'm sure this appeals more to my nostalgia than the craft that went into it, but this one I did for my own gratification.

Please, Have a look around
Most of the work I do is block printing, using a process called reduction linocut. Most of my work can be found under the Prints link, including an area that shows the linocut process. There will be other work on here, including student work (I am currently attending Utah Valley University), and writing that I do just for myself. Feel free to browse through whatever interests you, or just go check out the prints. If you find something you like, let's talk.
